It seems that the peony wall at Naumkeag goes in, then out of bloom almost immediately. Working in cut paper, my pieces often are in two parts—both the paper piece itself and the shadows that it creates when suspended and lit in front of a wall. In my piece, Lux Paeoniaceae (Light Peonies), the transient nature of the peony blooms is echoed in the fleeting nature of the shadows. As light in the gallery space changes, the shadows change, and they completely disappear once the light goes out. After sketching the peonies at Naumkeag, I traveled back to my studio and cut them from frosted mylar using surgical scalpels.
